Birding at Kankakee Sands

By: Barb Lucas, Kankakee Sands Birder

June is a great month to see and/or hear the breeding bird species at Kankakee Sands. Two species easy to spot are the Eastern Meadowlark and Dickcissel. If you join us for a birding field trip on Saturday, June 19, you should get to enjoy both. We’ll also attempt to get good looks at Grasshopper Sparrows and Henslow’s Sparrows, as they will be singing on their territories.

We will bird both grassy, prairie areas and wet, marshy areas. Hopefully we’ll see a Blue Grosbeak, too. I have not been able to find one yet in 2021 and need your help. Our group will spot many beautiful birds and also stop to notice prairie flowers and the bison. We’ll meet at the Bison Viewing Area at 7:30 a.m. Please RSVP for this event. Email me at blucas1123@gmail.com or contact Jeanette Jaskula at jmjaskula@yahoo.com to RSVP.
